Supporting Local Businesses: My Story

In 2016, I started a Facebook group to support local independent businesses by sharing reviews and photos. While it began as a great idea, it became unsustainable due to limited personal resources and a niche market. I couldn’t provide endless reviews on haircuts, facials, massages, and restaurants on my own limited budget. Additionally, not everyone needs a solicitor or estate agent every day.

Nelson Mandela once said, “I never lose. I either win, or I learn”.

But I didn’t lose hope. I knew that there were more creative ways to grow the group and support the businesses that make our communities thrive.

I was constantly networking in an effort to grow my business, but despite making numerous connections, I wasn’t seeing any progress.

With 30 years of administrative experience, I decided to become a Virtual Assistant and support local industries from the inside out, rather than the other way round.

All of a sudden, other businesses began to notice me as a serious businessperson, rather than just a hobbyist. This was crucial for my success. I could continue to support local businesses by doing what I do and I was getting paid for it as well! This was a game-changer – and all because I decided to take a risk!

With my love for networking, I decided to remodel my Facebook group by improving my focus and offering something everyone could benefit from. I believe that this model is the ultimate in networking, embracing all the best bits of the networking process and then giving you a bit more value to your membership.
